Strong thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon knocked out the power to thousands of customers across the Birmingham area. Alabama Power reported 15,000 outages. Jefferson County had the largest number, 9,000. Thousands more outages were reported in Shelby, Blount, and St. Clair counties.
