Leading a U.S. delegation on a visit to Russia, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa) said the two countries "don't need to be adversaries." During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, Shelby said, "We come here realizing that we have a strained relationship, but we could have a better relationship between the U.S. and Russia, because we have some common interests around the world that we could hopefully work together on. We could be competitors, we are competitors, but we don't necessarily need to be adversaries.," Shelby told Lavrov. Noting that President Trump's summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin is set for July 16 in Helsinki, Shelby suggested that it could be the beginning of "a new day."
