Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) Thursday night announced he would vote against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. In a Twitter message, Alabama's junior senator said he found the testimony of accuser Christine Ford "credible and courageous."
Jones then asked: "What message will we send to our daughters and sons, let alone sexual assault victims? The message I will send is this--I vote no. #RightSideofHistory"
The announcement came after a day of explosive testimony by Kavanaugh and Ford, in an extraordinary Senate Judiciary Committee hearing marked by emotional and contentious exchanges. Ford testified that she was "100 percent" certain Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982, when both were high school students. Kavanaugh strongly denied assaulting anyone, and denounced the process as a "national disgrace."
Jones's decision to oppose Kavanaugh, and side with his party's liberal leaders, is certain to generate a firestorm of controversy in a solidly red state where polls show President Donald Trump is very popular, and a majority of voters back Kavanaugh's confirmation.
