Felon Charged in Birmingham Policeman's Murder

A convicted felon Thursday was arrested and charged with the murder of a Birmingham policeman. Jeremy Owens, 31, was taken into custody following his release from a physical rehabilitation center, where he had been transferred from a hospital. Birmingham police Sgt. Wytasha Carter was gunned down on Jan. 13, while investigating car break-ins in the 900 block of Fifth Avenue North. A second policeman, and Owens, were injured. Owens is well known to law enforcement. He pleaded guilty to a 2011 robbery in which he was accused of shooting at a man. He was sentenced to 20 years, but served only three. Owens was arrested in November after leading sheriff's deputies on a chase, and charged with drug possession and other crimes. Police chief Patrick Smith says officers used Carter's handcuffs to arrest Owens. He is facing capital murder, attempted murder, and other charges.
