Ivey Gas Tax Hike Advances

Gov. Kay Ivey's controversial gas tax increase is racing through the Legislature. The Senate Transportation Committee Monday approved the 10-cent per gallon hike, setting the stage for a Tuesday vote on final passage. Senate president pro-tem Del Marsh (R-Anniston) supports the 56-percent tax increase, claiming it will aid industrial recruitment. "This is the type of legislation that other states look at and say, 'Hey, these people are serious - they're investing in their infrastructure.'" Marsh is expected to run for the U.S. Senate in 2020, but said he "can't worry" that the tax hike will be used against him by other Republican candidates. Opponents contend that the increase will be a burden on taxpayers, and note that much of the upfront money goes to the state port in Mobile.
