Alabama Voters Want Jones Replaced: Poll

A majority of Alabama voters want to replace Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) with a Republican, a new poll finds. The survey of registered voters by Mason-Dixon showed 50 percent of voters opting for a GOP replacement, while 40 percent preferred Jones. The junior senator fared worse with men, who oppose his reelection by 59-34 percent. Women narrowly favored giving Jones a full six-year term, 46-42 percent. 70 percent of white voters said that they are ready to bounce Jones from office, while 85 percent of black voters want to keep Jones.

In the Republican primary, the poll finds that the frontrunner, with 27 percent of the vote, is former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who narrowly lost to Jones in 2017. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) takes 18 percent, Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope) has 13 percent, Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) garners 11 percent, and state senate leader Del Marsh (R-Anniston) receives 4 percent. A quarter of GOP primary voters were undecided. Of the candidates polled, only Byrne has declared his candidacy. The poll did not include former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville, who recently announced that he would seek the Republican nomination.
