Alabama Lawmakers End Marriage Licenses

The Alabama House Thursday gave final passage to a bill ending marriage licenses. Couples instead will fill out an affidavit, to be recorded by the probate judge. Judges in some counties stopped issuing the licenses, following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling redefining marriage. The judges, who opposed gay marriage, said that requiring them to sign the license gave the appearance of an endorsement. Supporters of the bill say it will allow people who live in those counties to get married, without involving the judge. The bill now heads to Gov. Kay Ivey's desk.
