A Birmingham policeman shot and injured in the line of duty last week was released from the hospital Monday, police said. Det. Mikiel Smith, 47, was shot in the hand and arm Friday after confronting a man who refused to pay for a meal in North Birmingham. Smith, a 19 year veteran of the force, shot and wounded 26-year old Larry Dejuan Henderson, who then shot himself to death, the coroner's office said.
