Jones Votes to Rename Fort Rucker, Other Bases

Alabama's junior senator votes to change the names of all military bases named for Confederate leaders. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) backed an amendment proposed by liberal Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Alabama's Fort Rucker would be among the bases affected by the change. The Senate Armed Services Committee approved the proposal in a voice vote Thursday. "Servicemen and women shouldn’t have to live and work on American military installations that glorify men who took up arms against the United States in the name of defending slavery," Jones said. It's unclear if the measure will ever become law. President Trump, in a message on Twitter, made it clear that the idea is a non-starter:

"These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, and a history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom. The United States of America trained and deployed our HEROES on these Hallowed Grounds, and won two World Wars. Therefore, my Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations," the president wrote.
