The Alabama House Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a bill prohibiting biological male college athletes from playing on women's teams. The vote was 83-5. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover), said, "Forcing women to compete against biological men would reverse decades of progress women have made for equal opportunity in athletics." DuBose contends that progress is being endangered by transgender participation. "Trained males are bigger, faster and stronger than females. They have larger hearts and lungs, denser bones and stronger muscles. No amount of hormone therapy can undo all that. Every male given a spot on a women's team displaces a deserving female," DuBose said. The measure was supported by all Republicans in the chamber, but also received some Democratic backing. "It's important to make sure that we protect our baby daughters," Rep. Patrick Sellers (D-Pleasant Grove) said, declaring his support, as lawmakers cheered. Other Democrats, who opposed the bill, questioned whether the measure was necessary. The bill now heads to the Senate.
