ALDOT Director Arrested

ALDOT director John Cooper was arrested on Monday, authorities said. Cooper, 75, turned himself in to face a misdemeanor charge of harassment in Marshall County. The charge appeared to be linked to a dispute with a neighbor, according to an attorney from Cooper's attorney, George Barnett. "This morning, Mr. Cooper directed me to file a complaint for declaratory judgment cause of action in Marshall County Circuit Court regarding a neighbor who is falsely claiming an easement on Mr. Cooper’s property," Barnett said. "The clearest legal path to resolving this matter is to have the court determine whether an easement exists, and we look forward to resolving this matter." Cooper is free on $500 dollars bond. Cooper, who has served as ALDOT's director since 2011, made headlines recently after losing an emergency request to the Alabama Supreme Court to continue construction on a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway to Gulf Shores.
