Hoover Player's Attorney Calls for Coach's Ouster

An attorney representing a Hoover High School football player is calling for the outster of head coach Drew Gilmer, following a viral video. The video appeared to show a coach thrusting his hips against the face of a downed player at practice, after another coach pulled off the teenager's helmet. The player's attorney, state Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham), says "the acts committed by Gilmer are pervasive, perverted, abusive, extreme, outrageous, and beyond all possible bounds of human decency." She says the then-16-year old player suffered "physical abuse and extreme humiliation." The coach is on administrative leave, but Givan says the school system must go further. "To place him on administrative leave is not enough," Givan said. "Coach Gilmer committed acts that justify termination and being enjoined from ever coaching on any level going forward." Givan says attorneys are exploring possible legal action against Gilmer and the Hoover City Schools. The school on Wednesday appointed assistant coach Chip English as interim head coach.
