Bentley Impeachment Remains on Hold

The impeachment investigation of Gov. Robert Bentley  remains on hold until further notice.    The House Judiciary Committee Tuesday decided not to move forward after the special prosecutor, Ellen Brooks, said  impeaching Bentley could endanger a possible future criminal prosecution because of double jeopardy issues.  "The special prosecutor is taking the same stance as former attorney general Luther Strange," said former state Rep. Paul DeMarco (R-Homewood), a past chairman of the committee.   "If you've got the attorney general's office, that is involved in a criminal investigation, why would the Legislature take a chance of jeopardizing a criminal investigation?"  The committee planned to revisit the issue month-to-month.
