Birmingham police Wednesday made an arrest in the abduction of a woman in Avondale. The suspect was identified as Manuel Towns. The woman, Brittany Diggs, was forced into her car at gunpoint, outside her apartment at Fourth Avenue South and 38th Street on March 14. The abductor later ordered the woman into the trunk, and proceeded to drive around to various locations, periodically withdrawing the victim's money from ATMs. Diggs eventually made a daring escape at a gas station on Bessemer Road; the dramatic flight was captured on surveillance video. Towns is charged with kidnapping, robbery, and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was being held at the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $500,000.
