No Prison Time in Beating of Ex-Mayor

The man who pleaded guilty to attacking former Talladega Mayor Larry Barton has avoided prison.      Jefferson County Circuit Judge Clyde Jones gave Benny Green a 5-year suspended sentence.    He will not do any time, as long as he abides by the terms of his probation.    Green admitted using a tire thumper to attack Barton in the parking lot of a Cahaba Heights barber shop in 2015.  Green attempted to make his get-away on a bicycle, but was apprehended by bystanders.  Green accused Barton of having an extramarital affair with his wife, a charge Barton denied.   The attack made national headlines, in part because of the ages of the assailant and victim.   Barton was 74 at the time of the attack; Green, 71.
