Authorities identified a man killed in a shootout with Homewood police. Officers say they were investigating a possible car break-in outside AllSouth Appliance off Lakeshore Parkway early Thursday, when 35-year old John Payne of Birmingham took off running. Police say Payne fired at pursuing officers, hitting one in the thigh. Police returned fire, killing Payne. Homewood police chief Tim Ross said the injured officer has been released from the hospital, but still faces the possibility of surgery and complications from the injury. Police say dash cam video did not capture the shootout. But investigators say the audio from the dash cam supports the officers' account.
