Little is known -- publicly -- about the death of a UAB doctor. Bill O'Byrne, 54, died while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Friends say he was severely beaten and left for dead in a ditch. That claim has not been confirmed by authorities. O'Byrne was taken to a hospital in Mexico, and transferred to UAB, where he was pronounced dead this week. UAB declined comment, at the request of the family. The U.S. State Department last month issued a travel advisory, warning American tourists that violent crime is widespread in Mexico.
