Ivey Blasts Gay Charge

Gov. Kay Ivey Wednesday blasted a Democrat's claim that she was leading a double life as a closeted homosexual, calling it "a disgusting lie."  State Rep. Patricia Todd (D-Birmingham), the state's first and only openly gay lawmaker, made the allegation on social media, but failed to provide any evidence.   "This most recent personal attack against me is beyond disgraceful," Ivey said.   "It's a disgusting lie being pushed by a paid left wing liberal political operative."   Todd's attack was quickly denounced by both Democrats and Republicans around the state, and the normally media-friendly lawmaker maintained a low profile amid the controversy.   Noting that the dust-up comes less than three weeks from the Republican primary, Ivey said it's a sad commentary on the process:  "Whether these attacks are malicious or ignorant or both - they represent everything that's wrong with politics today."
