Birmingham Leaders Ok Safety Funds with a Catch

The Birmingham City Council agreed to fund the city school board with more than $3 million for the purchase of 14 metal detectors and more security wands.

The money is also supposed to be used for upgrades to some academic and after-school programs.

In the past, the Council largely gave the Birmingham School Board whatever monies they requested, with nearly no follow up. Now, Councilors say they want the board to lay out exactly where each dollar will be spent.
