The Alabama Department of Public Health wants you to know Vibrio is a danger. It is a naturally occuring bacteria, found in warm and brackish waters, that is part salty and a part fresh water mix found in such places as estuaries and deltas. Four cases of the flesh eating bug known as Vibrio Vulnificus are ongoing in our state. Six others are under review. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain and fever. Vibrio can lead to amputations or even death. Anyone with open cuts or wounds as well as abrasions or sores and those with compromised immune systems, are advised to stay out of the water.
