Alabama's senators reacted differently to the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa) said, "President Trump has made an excellent choice." Shelby added that Kavanaugh has "impressive credentials." Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) offered neither praise nor criticism, saying that the nomination "is only the first step." Jones said he will conduct an "independent review" of Kavanaugh's record before deciding how he will vote. Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan applauded the nomination of Kavanaugh, and called on Jones to support him. Jones is among a group of red state Democrats who are expected to feel pressure from constituents to support Kavanaugh.
