A one cent occupational tax goes into effect in Irondale tomorrow. More than 590 companies as well as non profit agencies and schools that are affected have been notified about the new tax via letter. City officials say the tax is needed to fill a more than $2 million budget shortfall. Many attribute that issue to Sam's Club closing its doors in Irondale. It had been their biggest tax revenue generator, bringing more than $1 million a year in revenue to the city.
