Sheriff Mike Hale says he wants deputies protecting all Jefferson County schools. Currently, deputies are assigned only to middle and high schools. Hale wants to expand coverage to elementary schools, by hiring retired deputies. "Every one of those children, every one of those schools, deserve to be protected," Hale said. The sheriff is working with the county personnel board to get 9-month contracts for the retired deputies. Classes start next week.
