A water main break in Bessemer knocked out service to thousands on Friday. Crews shut down a filter plant while they fixed the 36-inch main. Bessemer Utilities said the problem began with a valve that feeds into the main, located at 10th Avenue North and 18th Street, near Bob Sykes BBQ. Customers in Bessemer, Lipscomb, Midfield and Brighton lost water service, or experienced low pressure. The Jefferson County Department of Health asked restaurants affected by the disruption to close down until service was restored, which was expected by Friday night.
