Homewood Carjacking Suspect Charged

A teenager is charged with an armed carjacking in Homewood that touched off a wild police chase.  17-year old Kenneth Watts of Roebuck is accused of stealing a red Corvette from a woman at gunpoint on Oxmoor Road near Saw's BBQ on Thursday afternoon.   An all-points bulletin was issued, and a Homewood police officer spotted the vehicle on Valley Avenue.   The police cruiser chased the stolen car onto Green Springs Highway, and then I-65, where the crook crashed into another vehicle at the University Boulevard exit, police said.  After exiting at Third Avenue North, the suspect caused a second crash, but continued on, racing through downtown Birmingham.   After causing a third wreck at Carraway Boulevard, the teenager bolted the car, and ran into the woods, where he was captured, investigators said.   No injuries were reported.   Watts is charged as an adult with robbery, unlawful possession of marijuana, carrying a pistol without a permit and attempting to elude.   Watts will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail with bonds totalling  $60,900.
