Groundbreaking for Bessemer Amazon Center

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday for a major economic development project in Bessemer.    Officials turned dirt at the site of the future Amazon fulfillment center on Powder Plant Road.    "It's huge news, with 1,500 new jobs coming to the area, and they announced that they're going to  be paying at least $15 an hour," Gov. Kay Ivey said.   "That's pretty strong, that's real strong."   Amazon is investing $325 million dollars in the project.   "You look at the jobs, and the incentives that they're going to give to the young people of this area ... it's an exciting day for the city of Bessemer," Mayor Ken Gulley said.   The center is expected to be ready by next July.   Amazon's Ryan Lively said the center is expected to be open by next July.
