Change is coming to the Jefferson County Commission. Farewell tributes were offered Monday, as the commission held its final meeting before three of its five members leave office. Republican David Carrington did not seek reelection, and is being succeeded by GOP former Vestavia Hills city councilman Steve Ammons. Democratic commissioners George Bowman and Sandra Little Brown were defeated in the primary by Birmingham city councilors LaShunda Scales and Sheila Tyson. Republican commission president Jimmie Stephens is running unopposed for a third term, while GOP commissioner Joe Knight faces a challenge from the county's tax collector, Democrat JT Smallwood, in a heavily GOP district. Republicans were expected to maintain their 3-2 majority in Tuesday's election.
