Alabama's junior senator offered support to controversial CNN correspondent Jim Acosta, whose press pass was suspended after he was accused of placing his hands on a female White House intern.
Jones tweeted: "Freedom of the press was considered by our founding fathers of such importance that they made it 1st. In America, we should not only applaud the tough questions- but strive to answer them honestly... & ensure the press is able to keep power in check. Without exception. #Acosta"
Acosta and the intern tangled when she tried to take the microphone from him during a post-election press conference, after the president called on a different reporter.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted that Acosta's conduct was "absolutely unacceptable." Acosta denied any wrongdoing.
