A district attorney Thursday was injured in an ambush-style shooting in west Alabama, authorities said. A man opened fire on District Attorney Greg Griggers as he sat in his SUV in downtown Demopolis. A policeman shot and killed the gunman. Griggers was treated at a hospital and released. The motive was under investigation. The suspect, Steve Smith, was a state trooper who had been fired in 1996. Smith, at the time, was under investigation in connection with shots fired into the home of a judge. He was never charged. Griggers, a Democrat, serves as district attorney for Marengo, Greene, and Sumter counties.
