Birmingham Bridges to Close Starting Friday

The Interstate 59/20 bridges in downtown Birmingham will start closing this week, as a major replacement project moves forward, the Alabama Department of Transportation said Monday.   The shutdown will start Friday, and be complete by next Monday, ALDOT said.   The elevated section of roadway will be torn down over the next 14 months, and replaced.   Drivers are encouraged to use I-459 as an alternate.   Other traffic will be diverted onto local streets, including Carraway Blvd., Finley Blvd., 3rd Avenue South, and 4th Avenue South.
