Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope) Wednesday said there is no end in sight to the partial government shutdown, because Democrats are unwilling to negotiate with President Trump. "[Democrats] want him to capitulate," Byrne said. "This president is not going to do that, and I don't think they should expect that from any president." Byrne noted that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) rejected the President's latest compromise offer on Saturday, even before he announced the details. Pelosi has refused to consider any deal that includes money for the President's proposed wall along the nation's southern border. Byrne said the goal is to damage the President politically ahead of next year's election. "[Democrats] want to tear him down, but in the consequence of doing that, they're going to tear down the country." Byrne predicted that only public pressure would end the impasse. "The American voters have just got to put heat on the Democrats to come forward and negotiate." Byrne, a potential Senate candidate in 2020, made his comments on News Radio 105.5 WERC's "Alabama's Morning News with JT."
