A Birmingham police officer was shot and injured, and a suspect killed, during a confrontation downtown Wednesday evening, authorities said. The shooting happened after officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Family Market convenience store in the 500 block of 23rd Street North. Officer Cullen Stafford, a veteran policeman, was shot "multiple times," Chief Patrick Smith said. Stafford was taken to UAB for surgery, which went well, police said. Several officers responding to the shooting were fired on by the suspect, who was shot and killed, Smith said. The suspect was not immediately identified. A second officer was injured in a fall, the chief said.
