Hurricane Sally Causes Flooding, Damage, Outages in Alabama

Widespread power outages and flooding were reported, along with one death, after Hurricane Sally made landfall on Alabama's Gulf Coast early Wednesday. The hurricane came ashore near Gulf Shores at 4:45 a.m. as a Category Two storm, with top sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. A storm-related death was reported in Orange Beach, on the city's back bay side. A second person was missing, authorities said. More than 280-thousand customers were without power by midday, and flooding was widespread along the Gulf Coast, but also well inland. Hurricane Sally derailed a planned ribbon cutting ceremony for a $2-million renovation to the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores, after the storm severely damaged part of the structure.
