Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa) announced his strong support of President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, following a Capitol Hill meeting. "After speaking with Judge Barrett, I am confident that she is the right choice to serve on the Supreme Court," Shelby said. "Judge Barrett is exceptionally qualified for this role and maintains strong conservative values and a deep commitment to our Constitution. I have no doubt that Judge Amy Coney Barrett will be an excellent addition to the Supreme Court." Shelby said he looks forward to supporting Barrett's nomination, and urged his colleagues to join him. Alabama's junior senator, Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) has said he will not support Barrett, a move analysts say further complicates an already difficult reelection bid for Jones, who is running in one of President Trump's strongest states. A recent poll showed Jones trailing Republican challenger Tommy Tuberville by 18 points.
