Redstone Arsenal Among Space Command HQ Finalists

Redstone Arsenal is a finalist for headquarters of the U.S. Space Command, Gov. Kay Ivey announced Thursday. Ivey urged the Defense Department to choose the Huntsville Army post, tweeting: "From our many space/ defense assets to our skilled workforce, Alabama has the support structure needed to execute the mission." Locating the headquarters at Redstone could create more than a thousand jobs. Huntsville mayor Tommy Battle says the area provides an "unparalleled workforce ... with capabilities that include missile defense, aerospace, and intelligence." The five other finalists are: Joint Base San Antonio in Texas, Offut Air Force Base in Nebraska, Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, and Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, where the command is currently operating. An announcement is expected early next year. President Trump established the U.S. Space Command in 2018.
