Alabama House Speaker Mac McCutcheon on Monday announced he will not seek reelection next year. In a letter to colleagues, the powerful Monrovia Republican noted that he and his wife will enter their 70s at the end of his term, adding that they want to "make the most of our golden years." McCutcheon, who helped lead efforts to pass a controversial gas tax increase in 2019, indicated that he will continue to serve as speaker through the end of his term.
