Sharma Johnson's Killer Faces Execution

Willie Smith, convicted of kidnapping, robbing, and murdering Sharma Johnson in Birmingham in 1991, was executed Thursday evening. "Y'all, that was a horrendous crime that Willie Smith committed, just horrendous," Gov. Kay Ivey said during an appearance hours earlier at The Club. "We've looked at the facts, and wow, and it's tragic, but the execution is scheduled, and in all likelihood will go forward." Smith abducted Johnson, 22, from an ATM on Parkway East near Center Point, forcing the young woman into the trunk of her own car, robbed her of $80, then shot her in the head execution-style, before setting her car on fire in a Roebuck cemetery, with her body still in the trunk. Following the execution at Holman prison, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said, "Justice was served."
