At least four people were killed when a military helicopter crashed in California on Wednesday (June 8), KYMA reported. Naval Air Facility El Centro confirmed the crash on Facebook and said the plane belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is based out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
Officials also dismissed earlier reports that the aircraft was carrying nuclear materials.
"We can confirm that an aircraft belonging to 3d Marine Aircraft Wing crashed near Glamis, CA. Military and civilian first responders are on site. Contrary to initial reports, there was no nuclear material on board the aircraft," the base wrote on Facebook.
Cpl. Sarah Marshall of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing told the Los Angeles Times that the aircraft was an MV-22B Osprey. While officials did not provide any information on fatalities, a federal official told the paper that four people were killed in the crash.
There is no information on what caused the crash.
