Alabama Lawmaker to Resign Amid Criminal Charges

A state lawmaker is resigning, after he agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges in connection with an alleged kickback scheme, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. The Justice Department says Rep. Fred Plump (D-Fairfield) funneled $200,000 in taxpayer money to a mistress. Investigators say the money came from discretionary funds donated to Plump's youth baseball league by longtime state Rep. John Rogers (D-Birmingham), who employed the mistress as an assistant. Rogers is not charged with a crime. Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Tyson expressed surprise, after hearing the news. "I'm speechless. As a person, I respect Fred Plump ... and I'm just shocked." Prosecutors say Plump agreed to pay $200,000 in restitution. He also faces prison time and fines.
