Gov. Kay Ivey Thursday signed legislation prohibiting the use of a handheld cellphone behind the wheel. Drivers may only use a hands-free device. It's $50 dollars for the first violation. Repeat violators face escalating fines and points on their license. It's a secondary violation, meaning the driver can be cited only if they were pulled over for another reason, like speeding. The sponsor -- Sen. Jabo Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills) -- says he's hopeful the new law will save some lives and reduce distracting driving.
