John Rogers Indicted

Longtime state Rep. John Rogers has been indicted on a federal obstruction of justice charges. The Birmingham Democrat is accused of attempting to bribe someone to obstruct an investigation into the misuse of taxpayer money. It was part of an alleged kickback scheme that involved disgraced former state Rep. Fred Plump (D-Fairfield) who pleaded guilty in June. Prosecutors say Plump funneled $200,000 in taxpayer money intended for his little league to a longtime Rogers aide, Varrie Johnson Kindall. Kindall is charged with mail fraud, wire fraud and other crimes. Investigators say Kindall was romantically involved with both Rogers and Plump. Rogers, 82, has insisted that he did nothing wrong. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 12.
