Birmingham-Southern College Will Close

After 168 years, Birmingham-Southern College will close. Administrators made the decision Tuesday, after efforts to secure a state loan for school stalled in the Legislature. The college needed $30-million dollars to stay open, but State Treasurer Young Boozer rejected Birmingham-Southern's loan application. Sen. Jabo Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills) introduced legislation removing Boozer from the process. The bill passed the Senate with bipartisan support, but ran into opposition in the House. The college says it will cease operations at the end of May.
