Former Homewood Finance Director Arrested

Former Homewood city finance director Robert Burgett was arrested Tuesday, following an investigation into irregularities involving taxpayer funds. "When suspicious transactions were noticed, we quickly and apporpirately notified authorities of what we found and took appropriate steps to freeze any questionable disbursements, Mayor Patrick McCluskey said. The Jefferson County District Attorney says the amount exceeds $100,000. The arrest of Burgett, 63, comes after a state investigation into the city's usage of credit cards, and policies. The results of that investigation have not been announced, and it was unclear if the probe was related. City officials said the matter is under scrutiny. "We will closely examine how the misappropriations occurred," Council President Alex Wyatt said. "We are making every effort to recover the funds that were part of any fraud committed." Burgett is charged with Aggravated Theft by Deception. He was being held on a $500,000 bond at the Jefferson County Jail.
