President Trump on Tuesday announced that his adminstration is restoring the historic names of more military bases, including Alabama's Fort Rucker. The policy reverses the Biden-era replacement of all base names honoring Confederate military leaders. President Trump criticized the policy as unnecessary and politically motivated. The president made the announcement to cheering troops at North Carolina's Fort Bragg, which had its name restored earlier this year. Fort Rucker's name was changed to Fort Novosel to honor the late Michael Novosel, an Enterprise man who received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Vietnam War. The Enterprise post's former and future name honors Col. Edmund Rucker, a Confederate States Army officer who later became an industrial leader in Birmingham.
