Illegal immigrant charged with rape in Calera case

Investigators from the Calera Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence on Village Lane on Thursday night (July 31), leading to the arrest of Roger Delacruz Perez. Perez faces charges of first-degree rape. During the search, officers discovered that Perez, who is undocumented, was in possession of a handgun, which is prohibited under federal law for undocumented immigrants.

Due to the severity of the charges and Perez's immigration status, the Calera Police Department plans to seek federal prosecution in addition to the state charge of first-degree rape. Calera Police Chief David Hyche commended the efforts of his team, stating, "Our detectives and crime scene investigators worked tirelessly to identify, locate, and apprehend the suspect within 48 hours of the crime being reported."

Chief Hyche also emphasized the importance of well-trained and adequately staffed law enforcement in handling such cases. He remarked, "This case is a prime example that demonstrates the need for proactive law enforcement. This victim and all victims deserve our best."

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are preparing for the legal proceedings that will follow.
