The man suspected of opening fire at a bonfire party in Jefferson County, killing a high school cheerleader, was granted bond during a court appearance Friday. Steven Whitehead, 27, is charged with shooting and killing 18-year old Kimber Mills and injuring three others near Pinson last weekend. During an Aniah's Law hearing, prosecutors presented videos of the shooting. Investigators testified that a female claimed she was touched by Whitehead. A group then confronted the man, which authorities say led to the fight and gunfire. Prosecutors asked that Whitehead be held on no bond, but Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Kandice Pickett denied the motion, claiming there's no evidence Whitehead is a danger to the community. Bond was set at $150,000 for the murder charge, and $60,000 each for three attempted murder charges, for a total of $330,000. Observers say granting bond to suspects charged with violent crimes is a significant factor in the region's crime rate. "We see this happens in Jefferson County all the time," said former state Rep. Paul DeMarco (R-Homewood). "This is why we have this revolving door and then somebody gets out, and guess what? They commit another crime." The family of Kimber Mills will receive friends on Sunday, at Cleveland First Baptist Church from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m., with burial in Elvester Cemetery.
