Officer-involved shooting in Hoover (UPDATE)

A police officer and a suspect were both wounded in an exchange of gunfire Sunday morning at a Hoover home where a domestic dispute had already turned deadly.

Hoover police responded to a call at 8 a.m. at a residence on River Lake Drive in the Southlake neighborhood off Valleydale Road. According to family members at the scene, a young man had already shot and killed his father during a domestic dispute before officers arrived.

When police entered the home, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect. Both the injured officer and the suspect were transported to UAB Hospital. The conditions of the officer and suspect have not yet been released.

Hoover Police Captin Daniel Lowe relesed the following statement at 3pm on Sunday:

On February 8, 2026 at 7:49 AM Hoover Police responded a residence in the 2000 block of River Lake Drive on the report of a mentally disturbed person. Immediately upon arrival a 38-year-old male brandished a handgun at a family member standing nearby and began firing. One Hoover Police officer was shot and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The officer is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect’s family member was also struck by gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers returned fire and struck the suspect, who was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Because officers discharged their weapons the investigation was turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation. With ALEA conducting the investigation any further questions about this incident should be directed to them.

The Hoover Police Department would ask for continued prayers for all affected by today’s events. We would also like to thank our community for the outpouring of support and the numerous law enforcement agencies who responded and offered assistance.
